  • Cotton French Terry –What it is, why we use it.

People often ask us about the material choices in SoxsolS and the significance of the choices. We arrived at our current selection through trial and error. We considered number of significant factors. Most significant to the wearer are typically durability and comfort. This led us to the use of French Terry.

    Cotton

Cotton is a ubiquitous fiber used in a myriad of fabrics. People enjoy its soft and cool nature, and it is often used in light knits and weaves for warm and hot weather clothing and heavier fabrics for cooler weather.

    Durability

One challenge with cotton is that compared to other materials (wool and synthetics) it’s fibers are typically somewhat shorter. The short fibers challenges making cotton fabrics durable. Textile manufacturers of cotton achieve durability with the fiber with several methods but one is twisting the fibers into a yarn and knitting those yarns together in a manner that leaves large tight loops. There are several fabrics that are knit in this manner and one of the most available fabrics is French Terry. It often used in sweatshirts,  workout clothes and towels.

    French terry is both

    • Durable
    • Absorbant

    Durability

We mentioned, French terry is a knit and somewhat different than the familiar woven terrycloth used ubiquitously for towels. French Terry and a number similar knits are characterized by a type of knitting called “jersey fabric”.  The large loops in French Terry are created in a “weft knit” pattern or creating interlocking loops across the fabrics width (or weft axis). The interlocked loops have a great deal of durability and create a strong structure that stands up to pressure and wear.

    Absorbant

The loops created in this knit have a huge capacity for absorbance of moisture. In fact, the long loops of the terry enable to wick away moisture from the skin. Ultimately, French Terry can hold many, many times it weight in water.

    Breathability

The architecture of this fabric also allows creation of fabrics of substantial thickness which is important for comfort. Even when it is squeezed tight by bearing pressure of a human standing on it, the thickness allows air in the layer of the fabric. This feature is valuable for comfort of the bottom of the foot.

This absorbency and durability makes the French Terry fabric very well suited for a under the foot pad like SoxsolS.  The fabric takes the pressure of the balls of the feet with minimal wear and meanwhile absorbs the perspiration from the hundreds of thousands of sweat glands on the foots sole.  The fabric absorbs the perspiration of the day, but maintains a most environment that the foot sole needs to maintain is sensitivity and tactility.

  • Melton- why we use it, what it is

    Our wool top layer.

Our wool product is currently manufactured with a special wool weave known as “melton”. Melton is a very thick fabric that is one of a family of thick woven fabrics made of essentially two woven layers of fabric in turn woven together known as “double cloth”. This is a very durable fabric typically used in coats.

    Durable, absorbent and microbe fighting.

Wool is a excellent material for our use in SoxsolS as it has a number of outstanding properties. It is very durable, it is highly absorbent, and it is naturally anti-microbial. Wool is well known for being comfortable when it is wet. It is less well known how comfortable it is in warm weather, but a growing number of Americans are discovering this wonderful property for themselves.

Wool is very, very durable. It is used in industrial felt gaskets and carpets among numerous other uses.

Melton wool is most commonly used as a fabric for making warm, expensive, stylish winter coats which can often be quite colorful. Although developed for this type of use, it turns out that the thickness and durability of the weave is just what is needed for our product.

    Good when wet.

For use as a pad under the foot absorbency of perspiration is important. The wool fiber itself is highly absorbent and can absorb approximately 30% of its weight in water. That is the fiber itself not including the capability of the fabric weave structure to hold additional moisture. Wool continues to feel comfortable when wet when cotton is no longer comfortable.

Many people are often surprised when they learn how comfortable wool can be in warm weather. It is increasingly used in athletic summer wear.

For SoxsolS the thick, plush durable fabric creates an excellent support surface for the foot to rest against. The wool absorbs the moisture and keeps a comfortable path for air to reach the bottom of the sole while keeping a moist environment under the foot which is important for the tactility of the sole.

    THE CLOG

Earlier those not in the club saw these shoes as a bulbous clog for the stylishly challenged, or at best stylishly indifferent. Those days have passed. Today the brand makes a broad variety of styles, without compromising the famous comfort. They are even getting recommendations for great travel sandals.

Still the design of the rubber shoe leaves some items that can be improved upon. The slick rubber surface is not particularly breathable and moisture can collect there. For an added touch of luxury SoxsolS machine washable inserts for sandals can turn your Crocs into luxury footwear.

    • Providing a liner of thick plush French Terry cotton or thick plush Melton wool on the otherwise non-breathable, non-absorbent rubber surface.

    • When SoxsolS are soiled they can simply be tossed into the laundry.

    • Regularly removing the SoxsolS and laundering them washes away most of the perspiration and acids. Washing the odors from the SoxsolS prevents odor build up.

But most importantly, the thick springy rubber is enhanced by the thick plush fabric for a truly comfortable experience.

  • SoxsolS and Hyperhidrosis

Through the development of SoxsolS we’ve learned about the challenges of a condition called hyperhidrosis. People with this condition perspire substantially more than humans typically do. For these people the amount of perspiration can be very uncomfortable and potentially embarrassing.

People that have this condition on their feet have all the common issues with footwear but at a much greater magnitude.

    More perspiration means more:

    • liquid seeping into the footbed which can lead to decay of the sandal.
    • moisture and acids that cause footwear odor.
    • liquid and acids to cause unsightly stains.
    • of that the slippery puddle under the sole of the foot, ever present and annoying.

    SHOES

For some   indestructible shoes, like Crocs, aren't broken down as quickly as say leather shoes. Rubber sandals that are impervious to the water can last a long time and won’t be degraded by perspiration, but will instead capture that moisture and create a puddle.

    CLEANING

People find using copious amounts of baking soda as a natural deodorizer helps with absorbing odors. Just like baking soda absorbs the odors out of your refrigerator it will work with simply shaking a layer onto the smelly parts of the shoes and letting it sit for a period of time on the shoe or sandal.

    STAINING

There are limited options for preventing stains in sandals and shoes. Perspiration and acids can migrate through the textiles of socks and some liners. Once stained most materials are difficult if not impossible to remove stains from. SoxsolS provides a solid barrier across the entire footbed.

    THE PUDDLE

The puddle under the foot is another difficult to problem. Essentially the wearer needs enough absorbent volume under the sole of the foot  to capture the moisture. Textiles like thick woolen weaves or cotton French Terry can absorb great amounts of water, socks and inserts made from these materials can help greatly.

  • What are SoxsolS?

SoxsolS washable shoe inserts are reusable shoe inserts designed to be machine washable and dryer safe. SoxsolS “renew” their grip with every laundry cycle and can be reapplied into sandals and other shoes in lieu of socks.

SoxsolS are made by combining two layers; a top layer of fabric, a bottom layer of composite silicon rubber to create a thin insert that grips the footbed of sandals as well as closed shoes.

SoxsolS proprietary silicon rubber bottoms serve a dual purpose. It’s inherent tackiness acts as a slip resistant material, keeping SoxsolS in place under your foot. This layer also prevents perspiration from soaking into the shoe or sandal, causing odor and staining.

The top layer of high quality natural fibers, either cotton French Terry or Melton wool, wicks perspiration away from the feet and provides airflow which allows the foot to breathe.

SoxsolS are designed and manufactured by SoxsolS, LLC. The Corvallis, Oregon based company was founded in 2009 to address the basic problem with sock-less footwear; the build up of foul odor and sliminess under the foot that comes from bare feet sweating into them.

It was during graduate school summers in California, that SoxsolS’ founder stumbled upon a need to address this problem when his roommate insisted he begin washing his Teva sandals due to their odorous funk.

Realizing the need for a sweat absorbent, machine washable fabric layer to augment sandals, but unwilling to commit a double faux pas by wearing socks with sandals resulted in the invention of SoxsolS.

While this invention may have come about via an innovative solution to a trivial problem, it’s no small issue for many Americans who suffer from hyperhidrosis, or abnormally high perspiration.

SoxsolS also represents a significant contribution to the fashion industry in that they act as fit enhancement devices to prevent slipping around and blisters in expensive footwear, thus increasing comfort. They also prevent staining of expensive footwear from the acids generated in all feet.

SoxsolS is proudly manufactured in Oregon, USA. We source all of our fabrics from North America.

SoxsolS are distributed through Burten Distribution, a footwear supplier based in Los Angeles and Miami Leather Co., based in Miami.

  • Help For Hyperhidrosis – SoxsolS’ Technology Helps Take the Sweat Out of Your Shoes

Everyone sweats. It’s one of the miracles of our bodies, and a natural and essential process.

For some folks, however, sweating can become excessive. This condition is called Hyperhidrosis, and it affects over 200 million people worldwide.

For those who struggle with Hyperhidrosis, fashion sometimes has to come second to functionality. One particularly uncomfortable aspect of excessive perspiration is the feet. Sweat can cause feet to slide around and chafe inside shoes and sandals. The sweating can also lead to odor build up.

SoxsolS washable shoe inserts were a simple solution created to solve these issues. They are 100% machine washable and dryer safe. They act like a thin, flat sock that grips to the shoe or sandal, absorbing perspiration. It is removable and replicable.

We’ve had many customers tell us how helpful SoxsolS has been in combating these negative side effects of Hyperhidrosis.

They’ve told us about being able to wear shoes they never would have considered prior to learning about SoxsolS washable shoe inserts. They’ve also told us that they no longer have to worry about ruining expensive shoes, or having sore feet at the end of a night of dancing.

SoxsolS washable shoe inserts may not be able to stop you from sweating, but they can definitely help keep it off your feet and out of your shoes.

  • SoxsolS in Birkenstocks – A Perfect Pairing

Birkenstocks are awesome sandals, and the folks that work at Birkenstock are even more awesome.

As far as traditional regional fashions goes, I suspect it’s no surprise that Birkenstocks, in particular the Arizona, are very popular in the Pacific Northwest.

In fact, a lot of folks that work at SoxsolS have Birkenstocks. Some have even committed the dreaded Socks and Sandals fashion faux pas in their wayward youth. That was before SoxsolS washable shoe inserts made socks in sandals obsolete.

The Birkenstock sandal is as synonymous with Oregon as is granola and beards. Which, as it happens, are also in plentiful supply at SoxsolS.

So even though SoxsolS Washable Shoe Inserts can be paired with many types of sandals and closed-toe shoes, Birkenstocks are definitely one of our all time favorites.

It also might have something to do with the fact that if you take a pair of SoxsolS two sizes smaller than your Birkenstocks, and drop them in, they fit PERFECTLY.

    Amazing…

So remember, if you’re buying SoxsolS for your Birkenstocks, choose two (2) sizes below the size of the “Birks” you want to use them in.

    Enjoy and Happy Trails!

  • Top 5 Best Ways to Stop Smelly Shoes

    We’ve all smelled it.

Whether it’s your shoes or someone else’s, the odor that emanates from within a smelly shoe and sandals is unmistakable.

This can be especially true in sockless shoes, or shoes that are being worn with thin socks. The reason is simple: sweat smells. The more or it and the longer it stays, the smellier.

This embarrassing odor can result in some pretty uncomfortable social awkwardness, not to mention wasted money on new shoes or expensive cures.

Well, never fear. Here are some tips to keep your fresh Keens from smelling like last month’s crème fraiche.

The Deep Freeze – A popular method of keeping shoes from smelling bad is to pop them into a big freezer bag and toss them in with the peas and pizzas. Apparently, this freezes to death all the stuff that’s growing in your shoes.
Potpourri Purification - Another method of keep shoes from getting funky is to fill either hosiery or cheesecloth with a variety of pleasant smelling stuff and when you aren’t wearing them, you stuff these things into them and hope they either overpower temporarily the funk or absorb the funk.
The Classic – Of all the stinky shoe cures, this is the grandfather… dump a generous portion of baking soda into your soaked Sperry Top-Siders that smell like an unkempt barn. The next morning, eject the biscuit dough substance and if all goes as planned the stink.
Preemptive Smear – In some circles, a good lathering of the foot bottom with strong deodorant seems to mitigate the perspiration temporarily, but then your shoes have a bunch of deodorant residue in them.

SoxsolS Washable Shoe Inserts – You stick these thin inserts into your sandals or shoes and they soak up your sweat. When you’re ready, simply machine wash and machine dry them like regular socks. Then, reapply into your shoes or sandals. Repeat. These things last for years.
