FAQ
About SoxsolS
What are SoxsolS?
SoxsolS are washable shoe and sandal inserts made from natural fibers. Think of them as a thin, flat sock that stays put inside your shoe. They absorb perspiration, add a layer of cushioning, and help keep your footbeds clean. The concept is simple: the sock is in the sole.
How do SoxsolS work?
SoxsolS absorb the sweat that would normally soak into your shoe's footbed, causing staining and odor. They stay in place thanks to SoxsolS' proprietary SolSecure grip, a non-slip silicon rubber undercoating on the bottom of each insert. This also forms a perspiration-resistant barrier between the footbed and your foot.
What are SoxsolS made of?
Each SoxsolS insert has two layers. The top layer is a natural fiber fabric that sits against your foot and absorbs moisture. The bottom layer is a non-slip silicon rubber (SolSecure) that grips to the footbed of your shoe or sandal.
What fabrics do SoxsolS come in?
SoxsolS come in two fabric options:
- Cotton French Terry: Soft, absorbent, and breathable. A popular choice for warmer climates and warm-weather shoes.
- Melton Wool: Thick, plush, and naturally moisture-wicking. Preferred in cooler regions or for year-round comfort.
Both fabrics are durable, machine washable, and dryer-safe.
What colors are available?
SoxsolS are available in Black and Camel (a warm brown that closely matches the natural color of many sandal footbeds, including Birkenstocks).
Where are SoxsolS made?
SoxsolS are manufactured in Oregon.
How thick are SoxsolS?
SoxsolS are about 3mm (roughly ⅛ inch) thick. They add a layer of cushioning without making your shoes feel tight.
Product Styles
What cuts do SoxsolS come in?
SoxsolS are available in two cuts:
- Wide Cut for Sandals and Comfort Shoes: Shaped to fit sandals, clogs, and wider comfort shoes like Birkenstocks, Keens, and Chacos.
- Narrow Cut for Flats and Heels: Shaped for flats, heels, and narrower shoes like classic Converse All-Stars.
Which cut should I choose?
If you're wearing sandals, clogs, espadrilles, or any shoe with a wide, open footbed, go with the Wide Cut. If you're wearing flats, heels, loafers, or other narrow, closed shoes, the Narrow Cut is the right choice.
Can I use SoxsolS in Birkenstocks?
Yes. The Wide Cut is designed to fit Birkenstock footbeds. The shape closely follows the natural foot shape that Birkenstocks are built around. The Camel color is a particularly good match for the natural cork Birkenstock footbed. See the sizing section below for important Birkenstock sizing guidance.
What other shoes work with SoxsolS?
SoxsolS work with a wide range of footwear, including sandals, flats, clogs, heels, dress shoes, Birkenstocks, Keens, Chacos, Toms, Sperry Top-Siders, espadrilles, and comfort shoes. If it has a footbed, SoxsolS can probably fit it.
Sizing and Fit
How are SoxsolS sized?
SoxsolS use European sizing, ranging from 36 to 47. This is a unisex sizing system.
How do I choose my size?
The general rule is to order the same Euro size SoxsolS as your shoes. If you're not sure of your European shoe size, check the inside label or sole of your shoes, or consult a size conversion chart.
What about sizing for Birkenstocks?
Birkenstocks are a special case. We recommend ordering SoxsolS two sizes down from your Birkenstock size. This is because the Birkenstock footbed has a raised lip or "cup" around the edge, and SoxsolS work best when they sit inside that lip rather than on top of it. For example, if you wear a size 40 Birkenstock, order a size 38 SoxsolS.
Note: At the time of this writing, the smallest SoxsolS size available is 36. If your Birkenstock size is 36 or 37, order SoxsolS in size 36.
I have extra-wide feet. Which cut should I order?
We recommend the Wide Cut. If you're still concerned about width, order one size up from your usual Euro size for a little extra coverage.
Can I trim SoxsolS to fit?
Yes. SoxsolS are completely customizable. Because the two layers are permanently bonded, the fabric doesn't fray or separate when trimmed with scissors. You can even cut a slot to fit around a sandal thong (like on the Birkenstock Gizeh or Mayari). For thong-style sandals, we recommend cutting in from the side at the instep rather than from the toe end. This keeps the toe portion more stable and less likely to move around.
Care and Cleaning
How do I clean my SoxsolS?
Machine wash and dry them just like you would a pair of socks. That's it.
Does washing affect the grip?
No. The SolSecure silicon rubber grip actually renews with every wash. Washing removes any dust, lint, or residue that may have built up on the grip surface, restoring its tackiness.
Should I air dry or machine dry?
Both work fine. If possible, air drying is ideal because it keeps the sticky surface completely free of lint that can collect in the dryer. But machine drying is perfectly safe and won't damage your SoxsolS.
How long do SoxsolS last?
SoxsolS typically last as long as a pair of socks. On average, expect 1 to 3 years depending on how frequently you wear and wash them.
How to Use SoxsolS
How do I put SoxsolS in my shoes?
- Peel the pair apart (they're stored face-to-face with the grip sides touching).
- Roll each insert into the footbed, grippy side down, starting from the heel and pressing toward the toe.
Because the SolSecure grip is strong, rolling them in works better than trying to lay them flat all at once, especially in closed shoes.
How do I remove them?
Just peel them out when you're ready to wash. The grip is strong enough to stay in place during wear but releases easily when you pull from one end.
Do SoxsolS slip or move around?
The SolSecure silicon rubber grip is designed to keep SoxsolS firmly in place inside your shoe or sandal. In Birkenstocks, the raised lip around the footbed provides additional stability.
